Interview with Melinda Blau author of Consequential Strangers: The Power of People Who Don't Seem to Matter. . . But Really Do
_______________
Mike Carruthers:
Sure you have friends but you also have other important people in your life – just not AS important. They are "consequential strangers."
Let me give you an example; you have a mechanic and you don’t think much about him until your car breaks down but having that mechanic is a very, very important part of your life.

______________
Mike Carruthers:
Chit-chat, small talk - whatever you call it, it is important.
Debra Fine:
Anybody listening who thinks about a romantic relationship they're in and/or a business friendship - it either started with small talk and then developed into something more connected or it started with something heavy-duty and then because of small talk, the friendship was developed.

Interview with Mardi Horowitz, M.D., author of A Course in Happiness
_________________
Mike Carruthers:
The world is full of people who are unhappy, and it turns out there are two things that tend to produce discontent for these people.
Mardi Horowitz, M.D.:
What I call the "toxic twins" that tend to produce discontent are blaming and entitlement. That is people who feel too entitled and then blame everybody else or something else for what happens bad to them.
