Your Personal Presence

December 12, 2011

Interview with Kristi Hedges, author of the book The Power of Presence: Unlock Your Potential to Influence and Engage Others

________________

Mike Carruthers:
Presence it’s a hard concept to define and yet…

Kristi Hedges:
We’re all experts at other people’s presence. We know when someone walks into the room we can almost feel what their presence is and what their command is of a room and the energy that they bring into the room. However if someone says to you, “What’s your presence?” you’re probably going to stumble a little bit in trying to describe it.

Mike Carruthers:
You communicate differently than members of the opposite sex. That just is. However, in the workplace it can become a problem if you're not aware of some of these differences.

Michael Gurian:
A big difference between men and women is that men tend to aggressively self-promote more than women do and it helps them climb ladders. And a lot of this is based in brain chemistry differences.

Interview with Jeffrey Garton, author of the book Career Contentment: Don't Settle for Anything Less!

________________

Mike Carruthers:
Seeking job satisfaction in your career may be a big waste of time.

Jeffrey Garton:
Job satisfaction is never possible. As we age and our interests evolve we expect more - something new and different. It's in our DNA to complain and even if we're in the most satisfying job, we will find some reason to complain.

Interview with Dr. Tim Irwin, author of the book Run With the Bulls Without Getting Trampled: The Qualities You Need to Stay Out of Harm's Way and Thrive at Work

Mike Carruthers:
Why do some people love going to work and others hate it?

Tim Irwin:
I find that the people who are really passionate about their jobs have really found a way to connect who they are with what they're doing. And we do that by connecting with the customer. Line of site to the customer, I find, is the real key to this whole thing.

July 10, 2009

Interview with George Kohlrieser, author of Hostage at the Table
________________

Mike Carruthers:
In a situation like working for a horrible boss, you can feel like a hostage - so a good way to approach the problem may be the way a hostage negotiator would.

George Kohlrieser:
How do you build a bond with somebody you don't naturally like? This is what hostage negotiators do - how do you engage them in a dialogue and then how do you get somebody to see something different?

www.Job-Hunt.org
_______________________

Mike Carruthers:
If you're in the market for a new job perhaps the first thing you should do is Google your own name to see what comes up.

Susan Joyce:
This one poor guy has the same name as a sex offender and so you Google this guy's name and who comes up - the other guy. So he keeps having to go out and establish a separate identity for himself using his middle name.
