Mike Carruthers:
More and more employers are spending time and effort on making sure their employees are happy.

Jessica Pryce-Jones:
The reason that organizations are interested in happiness at work is because people who are happiest at work are doing a day and a quarter extra per week in terms of effort. So you are getting sixty days a year out of your most happy employees.

Jessica Pryce-Jones author of Happiness at Work: Maximizing Your Psychological Capital for Success says amazing thing can happen in an organization where employees are happy.

People who are happier at work have lots of personal benefits. They find they have 180% more energy than their least happy colleagues. They have 40% more motivation. They have 40% more confidence...

And that's just in the short-term.

And in the long-term, people who are happier at work tend to get better reviews, they tend to get more money and they tend to get promoted faster. So what's not to like about any of that?

Much of whether or not an employee is happy at work is their own responsibility. But the boss plays an important role. And driving people hard to acheive is not the best way.

I think people haven't understood that you can only drive a number for so long. And it's people who deliver the numbers. But if you nurture the people and think about, "What is it that makes my employees really productive?" - then you'll get the numbers as a result. And you don't have to drive the people to deliver it. You nurture the people to deliver the numbers instead.
