Mike Carruthers:
Heart disease is the number one killer - a lot of people get it and if you or someone you know has been told you need heart surgery…

Michael Ozner, M.D.:
My suggestion would be to consider getting a second opinion.

Dr. Michael Ozner, author of the book The Great American Heart Hoax

There was a wonderful study out of Harvard - Dr. Thomas Grayboys who looked at patients who were told they needed bypass surgery and saw them in second opinion, and determined that well over eighty percent of them didn't need bypass surgery. Those that followed his advice were healthy years later. So we know that a lot of the surgeries that we're doing in the United States are unnecessary.

Dr. Ozner is also concerned about exposure to cat scans…

Specifically with the sixty-four slice CT scans that have been advertised around the country to be used as a screening test on healthy people. What nobody's bothering to say is that it exposes people to a significant amount of radiation and this radiation exposure can lead to cancer - we know that.

In the emergency room, Dr. Ozner says cat scans can be very useful.

But to be taking patients that are healthy and exposing them to this amount of radiation I feel is wrong. There are better ways to evaluate patients to see whether or not they need to be treated aggressively and that is with blood tests.
