And I actually did a test with a reporter once. We had identical grocery lists, she bought the brands she always buys (regardless of whether or not it was on sale) and I bought the items but I just bought the sale brand that week. And I saved more than 30% by taking that approach.

And a little meal planning can save a lot of money.

You take the stores weekly sales flyer and plan your meals for the week around what you see on the front page of that ad. If chicken’s half price come up with some chicken meals and buy enough for the freezer so you don’t have to pay full price for the chicken next week.

Want to save money on meat? Your supermarket butcher is glad to help.

If you want to buy pork chops, you could buy cut pork chops (boneless pork chops at my store are $5 a pound) but pork loin, the whole pork loin is $2 a pound on sale. So instead of paying the premium for the pork chops in the package I simply take the pork loins, the butcher cuts it into pork chops for me while I shop and I get 2 and a half times as much food for the same price. Very few people do it because they don’t even know to ask.
