Serial entrepreneur Jim Beach, co-author of the book School for Startups, says if you have no idea what type of business to start think of doing business internationally.
We think import and export is a great way to start your first business because it also has a lot of ways of reducing risk. For example; if I import a product or something from China and I can get UPS to finance it for me (and you probably can) then I get my bank to guarantee that I’m going to get paid – that’s a very low risk strategy.
Of course the question is always how do you start an international business?
There is a program out there called The Gold Pea service which is offered through the US department of commerce. And it is an office and every one of our International Embassy’s across the world where you can go and say, “I’m interested in doing this business in your country.” And that office for $700 will put together a report on that market and introduce you to the people you need to know.
