Interview with Bill McLain, author of Do Fish Drink Water?

________________

Mike Carruthers:
Do you know why grapefruit is called grapefruit?

Bill McLain:
Well grapefruit (unlike oranges or lemons) grows in cultures like grapes and that's how it got the name grapefruit.

Bill McLain

Bill McLain, author of the book Do Fish Drink Water? Do they?

Well it depends upon if they're a salt-water or a fresh-water fish. If they're a salt-water fish the water draws fluid out of them, they have to drink water to replenish it. If they're a fresh-water fish the opposite occurs - they get their water by osmosis (the water seeps in through tiny holes in their skin.)

Is it true that Thomas Crapper invented the toilet?

No it was actually one of his employees. But he had his name on all of the toilet tanks, so during the First World War the soldiers were going to the restroom and they would see T.Crapper on the toilet tank and they started calling them crappers.

And do dolphins ever sleep?

If a dolphin were to sleep soundly he'd be exposed to great dangers. So his brain (like ours) is in two hemispheres but it works differently. The left hemisphere sleeps for eight hours and the right hemisphere stays awake and then the reverse is true for the next eight hours; for the final eight hours the total brain is awake. So when half the brain is sleeping the dolphin is somewhat lethargic but still alert enough to get out of danger.

Air Jordan shoes are wildly popular and have been since the 1980s. In the malls, on the streets, and in school gyms, it seems like everyone is wearing Air Jordans. These high-top and mid-top sneakers are a fashion statement as well as a great piece of sports equipment that can enhance basketball performance. Their popularity is curious, as a style does not usually last as long as Air Jordans do. Here are some of the reasons why Air Jordans seem to be timeless.

Air Jordan Popularity Reason #1: Michael Jordan wore Air Jordans. This brand of footwear exploded on the market once Michael Jordan started wearing them during his amazing professional basketball career. When he started wearing these high-top basketball shoes, he shocked the sports world because they did not look like the traditional high-tops that professional basketball players were wearing. Even though the National Basketball Association banned him from wearing them, he put them on each time he walked on the basketball court. The fact that he was fined $5000 each time he wore the Air Jordans seemed to increase their popularity even more. Since then, Air Jordans seem to be the most highly sought-after sneakers on the shoe market.

bells its because it was dubbed the Jordan Superfreak before. Nice job by Jordan Brand renaming the sneaker as Superfreak doesn’t sound like a sneaker at all. But no matter what you call it, the Jordan Cover 3 is back and better than ever. This Jordan Cover 3 comes in a nice Black/Varsity Red/White colorway. The Cover 3 features a very unique design, similar to the Air Jordan 14. This colorway features an upper made of black suede and white leather. Instead of using shoe laces, Jordan Brand decided to use a zipper. Varsity Red accents appear on areas such as the branding, parts of the sole, and the Jumpman on the heel area. The colorway isn’t the best, but I absolutely love the design. If you are really feeling these, you can pick up a pair now at retailers such as Eastbay.
Air Jordan Popularity Reason #2: All the other school kids are wearing Air Jordans. Schools all over the country are filled with kids wearing Air Jordans. These sneakers dress kids feet more than any other shoes. Most kids compare their sneakers to the sneakers of their classmates every day. When a new version of Air Jordans comes on the market, kids are clamoring to buy the newest version of these wildly popular sneakers. Some kids even want more than one pair of the shoes.
The Jordan Pro Strong is a team model that gets its design from the Air Jordan XIII. With all of the team Jordans we have hated over the years, this is certainly not one of them. The Jordan Pro Strong is one of the most popular team models ever, so most of us should be happy with this retro. This latest Jordan Pro Strong comes in a familiar Black/Varsity Red/White colorway.
Most Air Jordan hybrids are really hated with the Spizike’s and 6 Rings receiving some love. Well the Air Jordan Flight 9 is another hybrid but it’s not as hated as others. We now get a look at a brand new Air Jordan Flight 9 as it comes in a White/Black/Varsity Maize colorway. This Flight 9 features a really interesting design. White is used for the top half of the sneaker with black covering the bottom half. Varsity Maize accents appear on areas such as the heel, tongue Jumpman, and on part of the midsole. This Air Jordan Flight 9 is finished off with a clean white outsole. I really like this colorway of the Flight 9, it may be the best we have seen on the Flight 9. If you are really feeling these, you can pick up a pair now at retailer such as Finishline.Yesterday, we got a look at an Air Jordan Flight 9 that came in a nice White/Black/Varsity Maize colorway. With that colorway made clearly for the men, Jordan Brand has come up with this colorway only for the girls. This latest Air Jordan Flight 9 GS comes in a loud White/Perfect Pink/Stealth colorway. Most of this Flight 9 uses white
