The 4th of July is when we celebrate the anniversary of our nation’s independence. But on July 4th 1776 we were far from independent yet.

What it actually commemorates is the fact that the Continental Congress finalized the Declaration of Independence.  From there we still had to go through a Revolutionary War and also needed to do a Constitution, so we had several more steps to go.
