Genes can be thought of as the instruction manual for your body.

Our genes do not dictate our destiny. They just really put us on a path. A great example of that is nicotine addiction. People with certain genes actually see this nicotine differently and they get a lot more pleasure from that nicotine. But they’re not born addicted to it – and they won’t ever become addicted unless they come into contact with the nicotine in the first place.

Have you ever wondered why siblings often look similar to each other but not exactly the same? The reason is fascinating.

Each person actually contains 2 sets of genes. So our instruction manual is actually so important that it is repeated twice. And that instruction manual isn’t always the same for every single gene – sometimes they have slightly different information. And when we pass on our instruction manual to our children they only contain a single copy of that and it’s random which copy that is.

So each time parents have a child there is that randomness built in.

And it’s because of that randomness that a lot of the children look similar to each other and to their parents but they’re definitely not exactly the same.

Tomorrow how we can help our genes.
