Mike Carruthers:
You’ve heard a million times about the benefits of regular exercise - it improves your level of fitness, it helps control body weight… and now there is new research that shows that….

Brandon Colby M. D.: Exercise slows down our genetic clock. Our genes actually have a mechanism that counts down over time.

That’s why when we get into our seventies and into our eighties our skin starts to look differently, we start to feel differently – it's because our genes have actually been counting down. And we’re finding that regular exercise actually slows down that genetic clock, significantly.

The effects of this are so dramatic that when you compare a 30-year old coach potato to a 30-year old who has exercised regularly…

We see that there could be as much as a ten year difference in their genetic age based on whether they’ve been exercising or whether they’ve just been sitting on the coach watching TV.

Drinking red wine or grape juice is also good for your genes.

So genes that help preserve our longevity seem to become much more active in people who drink red wine on a regular basis but in moderation. We’re seeing that with grape juice as well.
