Interview with Dr. James Symons, author of the book Plain Talk about Drinking Water

_______________

Mike Carruthers:
Nothing is more important to your survival than the water you drink which is one reason why so many people buy bottled water.

Dr. James Symons:
To take water on a hike or something in a bottle so you can hydrate yourself is fine but to buy bottled water because you’re afraid of what comes out of the tap is just wrong.

Dr. John Symons, author of the book Plain Talk about Drinking Water

All of the water utilities are required by law to monitor for over 100 contaminants at regular intervals throughout the year and each year our consumers get what’s called a consumers confidence report to show that the water is meeting the standards. So the water is definitely safe to drink in this country from almost every tap.

However Dr. Symons says you should probably not cook or drink with hot tap water.

Because the hot water of course goes through your hot water heater which is a lot of pipes and valves. In any event hot water tends to dissolve metal out of the linings of the pipes and into the water. So I don’t recommend people use hot water drinking or cooking.

Storing water for emergencies is a good idea however…

You really shouldn’t store water for over 6 months. Water is not sterile it doesn’t have germs in it but it does have bacteria in it and they will grow over time. So the water then changes its character and you don’t want that.
