But it also tells you that they will, when they’re talking to you one the phone; perhaps feel a little bit more comfortable being deceptive than they will in other venues. What I tell people is that is suggestive of the fact that a face-to-face meeting is what you need to have much, much more of.
To determine if someone is lying one thing to watch for is attitude.
And what happens with people are being deceptive is that when they are being accused they will be formal in their response, they may think hard about it, look down, slump. Someone who is wrongly accused who’s honest will get really angry if you suggest that their the one that “did it”. And their attitude will be one of the largest indicators of whether or not they’re being deceptive.
And Pamela has a great technique to get people to tell you the truth.
One of the best questions to ask someone is, “Is there anything else that you want to tell me?” at the end of a negotiation. There’s so many people out there, that when you ask them that, they will come forth with things you can’t imagine – all kinds of specifics, all kinds of concerns – that’s one way to get information from somebody.
