Interview with Damian Birkel author of Career Bounce-Back!: The Professionals in Transition Guide to Recovery & Reemployment

______________

Mike Carruthers:
Losing your job is probably one of the most lonely feelings you can have. But it's something that almost all of us will go through.

Damian Birkel:
Statistics show that your average forty-year-old will lose their job at least three times between now and retirement.

Damian Birkel

Damian Birkel, co-author of the book Career Bounce-Back! says if you find yourself out of work...

First of all, it's important to understand that unemployment is a temporary condition and not a disease. Don't be afraid to ask for help. It's also important for you to lower your expectations. At least when I was out of work I expected to be able to find a position within two weeks and that just didn't happen. At one point I actually started a "no" list. Someone I used to work for said, "Damian, it takes 99 "no's" to get one "yes." So I literally - every time I got a refusal or a letter saying not interested - I put that name down on my "no" list and it took 98 "no's" before I got that one "yes".

But Damian says it's sticking with it and staying proactive that not only gets results it helps keep you from getting depressed.

The re-employment process is riddled with rejection and it's a part of the process and you just have to move through it. It's not easy, but it's a part of the process.
