Paula Caligiuri, PhD

Paula Caligiuri, author of the book Get a Life, Not a Job, says it’s no wonder work and money are such big stressors since the work place and the whole concept of job security have changed so dramatically.

It used to be in the past that excellent performance was all one needed in order to keep your job. Now an excellence performance is necessary but no longer sufficient to keep your job. What helps is you really need to be in one of those highly critical roles for the organization and you need to possess skills that are very unique.

So how do you know if you’re in one of those highly critical roles?

Really look at what the organization, how the organization creates well. How does the organization compete? And see whether you have a line of site between what you do and the bottom line of the organization – or if you’re in more of a support role. If you’re in one of those support roles chances are really good that you’re not in a critical role.

And not to make you more stressed out but if you think you’re job is secure….

60% of people who lost their job in the past year and a half had no warning that they were to be losing their job. So what we used to think was so safe - really isn’t.
