Mike Carruthers:
You often hear the advice that it’s important to make peace with our past, but what does that mean exactly?

Debbie Ford:
Well in the simplest terms, I think making peace with your past is finding something good, same value, some gold in it.

You know most of us have had bad things happen to us growing up. So we make peace when we find the gift, when we really say, “There has to be value in here somewhere, where is it? What could I learn? What could I take away?”

Debbie says, resentment is a big reason why some people get stuck in their past.

You know pettiness is rampant and we will hold onto resentment and we will make somebody wrong and we will kill off our own power and our own happiness in order to prove that we’re right and they’re wrong.

When couples get divorced Debbie says this happens a lot.

Because the ones that have been left usually choose to prove their partner screwed up their life - now that is one choice, right, they can make and then they will follow that path and prove that their life can’t’ be great anymore.  Or they have to come back to ground zero and say I have got to take on my own life and know that it’s my responsibility. And this is the work that can really heal ones heart.
