Mike Carruthers:
Every man should know particularly in a business setting that people judge you by how you dress.

Glen Sondag:
If you’re someone who’s trying to make a good impression, they look down and they see that you haven’t shined your shoes in 3 years – I think it says something about you that you just don’t care.

Glen Sondag, author of the book Anything Other Than Naked, says men tend to under-estimate how important shoes are – and here’s something else to consider.

If you’re wearing a necktie then you’re wearing a dress shirt. A dress shirt is defined as a long sleeved shirt. There is no such thing as a short sleeved dress shirt.

If you’re wearing a sport jacket or a suit and you stand up you will always look better if the jacket is buttoned.

The rule is very simple you button all the buttons except the bottom one. So if you’re wearing a 2 button jacket you button you button the top one only. If you’re wearing a 3 button jacket you button the top 2 or just the middle one but the bottom button always stays unfastened.

The exception is a double breasted jacket in which case all the buttons should be buttoned when you stand up. Your socks should always be darker than your trousers and so should your shoes.

So if you’re wearing dark grey slacks you should have on a pair of black shoes but you shouldn’t be wearing a light brown pair of shoes with a dark suit.
