Mike Carruthers:
If you're in the market for a new job perhaps the first thing you should do is Google your own name to see what comes up.

Susan Joyce:
This one poor guy has the same name as a sex offender and so you Google this guy's name and who comes up - the other guy. So he keeps having to go out and establish a separate identity for himself using his middle name.

Susan Joyce, Editor of Job-Hunt.org, says the best way to find a new job is to be recommended by someone else.

When you're hiring somebody into a company - bringing in a total stranger is a little threatening but if you come to the employer being referred by someone the employer knows, then you've got a leg up.

In today's job market Susan says you're wasting your time and the employer's time applying for jobs you're not qualified for.

You end up sort of poisoning the well. Because often people will do that over and over again and employers get to the point where they say, "Oh here's this idiot again" and they just sort of ignore them.

Job seekers today typically apply online so here's a great tip to help you stand out...

Don't apply online - send a letter through regular old "snail mail" with your resume and make the cover letter stand out so that it says, "You're looking for this kind of person with this kind of experience and I have that experience."
