Being so electronically connected as we are today causes a lot of anxiety and stress as we rush around trying to keep up with everything and everyone.

Gayatri Devi, M.D.:
And what I’m trying to say is you can be successful and you can still be in a place of much less stress by just incorporating small things into your daily life.

Gayatri Devi, M.D. and author of the book A Calm Brain: Unlocking Your Natural Relaxation System...

Very simple things like turning off your cell phone for an hour, spending a weekend without any schedule and without a clock, hugging someone, being forgiving.  What that does is it slows your heart down, it slows your breathing down, it amps up the activity and the relaxation system in your body and that’s very important.

Our electronic gadgets have made a lot of our human contact unnecessary and Dr. Devi says that is not a good idea.

If you have a choice between going out with a friend versus staying at home and Skyping with a relative, choose going out with a friend. It’s more real it connects more with your core brain – it’s better for your health.

It wasn’t that long ago that you couldn’t communicate with people 24 hours a day and life still went on and people survived.

And it’s really also an issue of control, the ability to say, “Well, someone else is going to be able to take care of this just as well as I can if they cannot reach me.”
