Robert Siciliano is an identity theft expert with McAfee.com…
If you have a smart phone, if you have a connection with the internet with a PC - you have some responsibility to protect your identity, to invest in anti-virus, to know what you’re getting yourself into.
ATM machines have now become a problem, thieves can install a skimming device on an ATM that is very hard to detect.
And once installed on the face of an ATM does in fact skim the information of the back of your credit or debit card and they usually install a small wireless camera that records your pin code. So what I always recommend that people do: #1 pay very, very close attention to your statements. And the most important thing that you do anytime you use an ATM you want to cover up the keypad with your other hand to mask your pin.
And protect your social security number as best you can. Just because someone asks for it doesn’t usually mean you have to give it.
Somebody can open up a new account under your name as long as they get your social security number. And the social security number, unfortunately, is ubiquitous it’s all over the place it’s in filing cabinets and in databases everywhere.
