Tim Schurr, author of the book Get Out Of Your Way: How to Eliminate Self-Sabotage and Win Your Life!...
So first thing you do when you’re starting to feel stressed or overwhelmed and that critcal inner voice starts to come up in your mind – first thing you can do is look up and take a few slow deep breaths in through your nose. When you’re stressed out and you’re upset you’re almost always staring at the ground and breathing through your mouth, very short and shallow – which causes you to feel anxious and stressed.
Why does looking up help?
Because it will make you feel more calm. When I worked in the psyche hospitals I worked with a lot of people that had depression and I noticed that I never saw one depressed person looking up, they were always looking down. So I started to ask people (and you try this Mike or you can have your listeners look up and try to worry about something – usually nothing happens, your mind gets quiet. So when you look up and you breath through your nose it slows your body down, it allows you to become more resourceful – from there you focus on the outcome you want.
And that will lead to action.
Those actions are what are going to build your confidence. If you would just go for the five-minute walk instead of talking about it you’ll feel better because you did something. Action makes you feel strong.
