You realize that alcohol was not a health food. That it decreases brain function, you’ll start to get more sleep because less than seven hours of sleep at night is associated with lower overall blood flow to the brain. You’ll also start to exercise because you’ll realize, “Oh that’s the fountain of youth, and it boosts blood flow to my brain.”
And there’s more you can do to make your brain function better.
Great diet, social connections, new learning, vitamins, and fish oil – it just makes a huge difference in everything you do.
Dr. Amen says despite the science this concept is a tough sell to most people.
A lot of the people just think that everybody has the same level of free will; we all make good decisions or bad decisions just based on what we decide. When you actually start looking at the brain you realize that it just doesn’t correlate well with the science and the science tells us when your brain is optimal you’re so much better, doing your life in a goal-directed way.
