Interview with TV Health Expert, Dr. Art Ulene
____________

Mike Carruthers:
Weight loss, diets, schemes and pills have been around forever and as most of us know from experience, they usually don't work.

Dr. Art Ulene:
People are getting very tired of hearing this but it really does boil down to calories in and calories out.

Dr. Art Ulene

Television health expert Dr. Art Ulene says many weight loss myths still persist - for example, you can jumpstart a weight loss diet by fasting.

The trouble with fasting is that it is nutritionally unsound - it destroys your mood and it leaves you ravenously hungry, so you make up for it later on.

Another myth is that drinking lots of water will make you lose weight.

It may make you feel full temporarily, but it won't relieve the physiological sensation of hunger. I think water is a very smart strategy if you use it as a substitute for the sodas and sugared drinks that so many people are consuming.

And Dr. Ulene says sugar is not as bad as a lot of people say it is...

Some of the healthiest foods in the world contain sugars in one form or another - oranges, apples, pears, even milk - all contain natural sugars and the research shows that people who consume those foods regularly actually weigh less than people that don't. The problems with weight occur when you start adding sugars to foods in amounts that are not natural - by the way, it doesn't matter if the sugars that are added are natural or not.
