Mike Carruthers:
Depression is rampant and people are particularly susceptible to it in winter.

Jeffrey Rossman:
Many people don’t get enough sunlight; they are not spending enough time being physically active. In addition to all of that people don’t get enough sleep which can contribute to depression.

Jeffrey Rossman, author of the book The Mind-Body Mood Solution, says in addition to getting sleep, sun and exercise there are other important things people with depression need to know.

People who have a negative way of interpreting events, that’s going to bring their mood down. So it can be extremely helpful to take a look at your own thinking and learn more constructive ways to interpret the events of your life and to be more compassionate to yourself.

How do you do that? Well by practicing what’s called mindfulness.

What that means is paying attention to what you’re experiencing in the present moment and trying to do that without judging yourself or judging others harshly is a wonderful antidote to depression.

Another thing depressed people do is ruminate.

They worry about the future, they dwell on the past and for people who are depressed finding ways that bring them into full engagement with the present is a powerful way to enhance their mood.
