Mike Carruthers:
When you think about healthy eating - for many people it congers up a pretty negative image.

Dr. Timothy Harlan:
And I think it does grow out of that kind of health food movement the tofu and crunchy granola movement of the 70tys and 80tys that we think that that’s what healthy food is – that’s not what healthy food is.

Dr. Timothy Harlan

Timothy Harlan M.D. and author of the book Just Tell Me What to Eat!, says most people today have a pretty good idea what healthy eating looks like and what’s fascinating is people actually like healthy food as long as they don’t think of it as healthy food.

There have been so many studies that say if I put a healthy beef stroganoff in front of you “healthy”” which generally really just means reduced calorie, maybe a little less fat and I put a traditional beef stroganoff in front of you. About 80-85% of the time in blind taste testing’s you will choose and say you like the healthier version better. Most people actually don’t like super rich super salty food.

Healthy eating simply has a bad imagine.

Ruby Tuesday’s did a great trial with this they failed miserably. They thought there was a demand they put all these healthy recipes on the menu and nobody bought them. Even though in the lab the folks said they tasted better than the traditional versions. My argument is just quit saying it’s healthy!
