Mike Carruthers:
If you want to keep your breath fresh remember to not only brush your teeth but brush your tongue.

Dr. Harold Katz:
Your tongue is more or less like those shag carpets from the 70’s where the bacteria are hiding in-between the pile that makes up the carpet. So you have to keep your tongue really clean to keep the food particles out of the tongue.

Dr. Harold Katz, Founder of The California Breath Clinics, says certain holiday foods can really give you bad breath – particularly foods with sugar in them.

Things like candy canes because it’s feeding the bacteria. Then you get into other sugary types of foods, the prepared foods especially the cranberry sauce and the candied yams. Potatoes and things like that, which are carbohydrates, really have no effect on bad breath, doesn’t make it better worse. But once you throw a whole bunch of sugar on there or marshmallows you’re going to have a problem.

Dairy foods can be a big contributor to bad breath.

And the number one worst food around holiday time is eggnog. Because now you’ve created sort of a monster by combining sugar, dairy foods and then you throw a little alcohol in there to give it some buzz and you’re going to create the three worst things.

Interestingly people will sinus problems can have bad breath and certain medications can cause it as well.

Things like antihistamines, antidepressants, high blood pressure medicine all have dry mouth as a side effect so again drink plenty of water to overcome that sensation.
