Interview with Dr. Robert Butler, author of the book The Longevity Prescription: The 8 Proven Keys to a Long, Healthy Life

_______________

Mike Carruthers:
Increasing human longevity it’s a hot topic because obviously we have a lot of control over how long we live.

Dr. Robert Butler:
Well in the last century the 20th Century we gained 30 additional years of life – that’s greater than had been obtained during the proceeding 5,000 years of human history – it’s an extraordinary change.

Dr. Robert Butler

Dr. Robert Butler, author of the book The Longevity Prescription, concedes that 80% of that increase in longevity is actually due to a decrease in infant mortality. But 20% of the increase in longevity is in people 65 and older and it has a lot to do with our lifestyle.

They all think about diet, physical exercise, they realize they shouldn’t drink too much, but they don’t think about having a purpose in life and we know that actually leads to a longer life too. They also don’t think as much about having relationships, as they should. I think that’s one of the reasons women live longer than men as they have more intimate closer ties.

Dr. Butler says its not only about living longer it’s also about living better in your later years.

There’s a huge contrast between those who smoke and have emphysema and are miserable in their old age and those who never smoked and are enjoying a pretty high quality life.

75% of what determines how long you’ll live is up to you.

That’s big news because that tells us how much control we do have if we choose to exercise it.
