Now it has to be said on the other side of the ledger there cancers against which we’ve made so far virtually no progress in terms of treatment, lung cancer and pancreatic cancer would be 2 of them. But there are some, as I say, some enormous advances that have been made. Another one that perhaps doesn’t get the attention that it should is the development of vaccines to prevent cervical cancer another major cancer. And these vaccines have been essentially 100% effective in preventing cervical cancer with virtually no side effects.

The number of cancer cases has risen over time and Robin says that’s primarily because we are living longer.

Cancers are essentially disease of old age. They rise because we get damage to our DNA we accumulate so called mutations in our DNA and so that takes time. The longer we live therefore the more likely we are develop a cancer.
