Mike Carruthers:
So, will 2005 be the year your New Year’s Resolution really
sticks?
Cherie Carter-Scott:
What’s going to make this year different from last year or the
year before has to do with really what you’re willing to commit
to. And what you’re willing to do differently to make certain
that happens.
Cherie
Carter-Scott, author of the book, If
Life Is A Game… These Are The Stories
All of
us know the adage that says, “The definition of insanity is
doing the same thing over and over again, and expecting different
results.” So you have to do something different this year to
be able to have those results be different.
It’s
not just a better diet. It’s not just a better exercise program.
It’s a real commitment deep inside yourself.
And
Cherie says you need to find something that keeps you motivated.
And if you can’t think of something, make something up!
I remember
a man I used to coach years ago, and he was Jewish. And I said
to him, “In order for you to lose the weight you need to lose,
what’s the thing that you can do to motivate, inspire or use
as a consequence?”
And he
said, “Well, I’d have to donate money to the Nazi party.”
And I
said, “Oh my goodness! That’s rather extreme.”
And he
said, “Well, that’s so awful - that’ll force me to lose weight.”
So, I
don’t think that’s the thing I would recommend to everybody,
everyday, but it’s whatever works.
And simple
accountability can also work.
To have
a person outside themselves that they have made a promise to,
because often we will let ourselves slip and slide. But, if
there is an external person, then we’ll keep that agreement
with them. So that definitely works for a lot of people.
