Carruthers:
There
are some common symptoms to look for when people are lying to
you. When they say things like, "trust me," or "would
I lie to you?" or body language cues, like nervously moving
their hands to their head while they're talking, or refusing to
look you in the eye.
Stan Walters:
Which brings up a good point, no single behavior by
itself proves anything. Random symptoms do happen, such as the
occasional "trust me." Look for a cluster. Are there
two or more symptoms?
Stan B. Walters,
author of the book The
Truth About Lying…
Or, another thing,
is look for a contradiction. A very simple one, for example,
is saying "yes", but shaking the head "no",
is a contradictory signal.
How someone answers
questions can also reveal if they're lying. Stan says O.J. Simpson
displayed some classic symptoms of deceit.
His plea
in front of the judge, "100% absolutely not guilty."
There are two symptoms there that are typical of a person who's
withholding some information. Or, for example, when investigators
Van Adder and Lang asked him, "When was the last time you
were at Nicole's house?" He responded, "Oh, I don't
go in, I won't go in her house, I haven't been in her house
in a week, maybe five days." Well the question was "When
was the last time you were AT", - he responded IN. That's
what we call surgical denial - they change the question just
enough, so if they answer it, it sounds good, but if you're
not paying attention you'll miss that they're changing and withholding
a little bit of information on you.
