Mike
Carruthers:
An
important characteristic of being a good manager is the ability
to give recognition and praise.
Rodd Wagner:
As easy as it is to give someone recognition and praise,
we find that there are large proportions of any employee population
that do not feel that they're getting adequate recognition for
the work they're doing.
Rodd Wagner,
author of the book 12:
The Elements of Great Managing ...
Not only do employees
need regular recognition and praise, they also need someone
talking about their progress - a sense of where they're going,
"How am I doing, give me the feedback so I can adjust my
efforts." And we find that when managers do this, the employees
reciprocate by doing things that help the business - ultimately.
What Rodd is
talking about is the result of ten million interviews conducted
by the Gallop organization over a ten year period and he says
it's clear that if a manager wants to learn to do his or her
job better…
An awful lot
can be learned when a manager just takes the time in trying
to be a better manager. And a lot of that has to do with face-to-face
time with one's team members saying, "Tell me about what
recognition and praise means the most to you? Tell me about
the things that you do best and when you get the greatest charge
out of your work day." That's a large part of being a great
manager - just spending time talking with your team members.
