Mike
Carruthers:
Where are
most of the germs in your house?
Allison Janse:
A lot of people think that the bathroom in their home is the
germiest thing and again that the toilet is the germiest thing.
It surprises them to know that their sink has 200 times more
bacteria in it than the toilet.
Allison Janse,
co-author of the book, The
Germ Freak’s Guide To Outwitting Colds & Flu…
People prepare
a lot of raw meat in their sink, which has e.coli, and salmonella
in it and they don’t disinfect the sink. So, then they drop
something in it and think ok, I’ll just give it a quick rinse
but you really should just send that sucker down the garbage
disposal unless you’ve disinfected the sink.
Allison’s co-author
tested desktops in a corporation for germs…
And found that
the desktop had 20 thousand germs per square inch as opposed
to a toilet lid that only had 49. And I think it’s because we
walk around and the average adult touches all these things at
work and then you bring them back and touch your desk and you
don’t watch your hands. So, just disinfecting your desktop,
your phone- the phone receiver has 25 thousand germs per square
inch- and your computer keyboard, which has 3 thousand- and
just by doing that once a day you can kill 99% of the germs.
If you stay in
hotels you likely know by now to avoid that hotel bedspread
but that’s not the only place where the germs are.
The TV remote,
the telephone and the refrigerator door handle, those are the
germiest things in a typical hotel.
