Mike
Carruthers:
Are you taking
good care of your brain? How would you even know?
Dr. David
Perlmutter:
All of the things that we talk about in terms of those things
that a person can do to stay healthy are just as applicable
if not more so to brain health.
Neurologist,
Dr. David Perlmutter, author of the book, Better
Brain Book…
For example people
are told that anti-oxidants are a good thing for health, why?
Because they prevent the damage to the body from chemicals called
free radicals. Well, interestingly, one study that was published
in January of 2004 showed that those people having the highest
intake of Vitamin C and E have a 78% risk reduction for Alzheimer’s.
There is a new
recommendation to promote brain health and prevent Alzheimer’s
you may not have heard of and that is to take a supplement called
DHA.
It was actually
published by the American Medical Association in 2004, they’re
finding that highest DHA levels reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s
dramatically. This is the critical factor for brain development
in infants and in children and teenagers and also for protecting
the brain and reducing risks, for things like Alzheimer’s in
adults.
In fact many
baby formulas already have DHA added to it and Dr. Perlmutter
believes you’ll see a lot more foods enhanced with DHA in the
coming months.
It’s important
to understand that I’m not saying DHEA that is a different type
of supplement all together.
Next time more
things you can do to care for your brain- I’m Mike Carruthers
and that’s Something You Should Know.
