Mike
Carruthers:
Science is beginning to uncover a lot of things that may affect
our brain health.
Dr. David
Perlmutter:
Even things so commonly used like over-the-counter acid-blocking
drugs can block the absorption of Vitamin B-12 and that's bad
for the brain.
Neurologist,
Dr. David Perlmutter, author of the book, The
Better Brain Book…
And when you
block B-12 you raise in the body something called homocysteine
and raising homocysteine is very bad for the brain and increases
risk of Alzheimer's. So these are day-to-day modifiable factors
over which people have a lot of control.
It appears coffee
may have an affect on our brains.
Matter of fact,
one study that was performed at the University of Hawaii, demonstrated
a remarkable reduction in Parkinson's risk, cutting it in half,
in people who consumed about two cups of coffee a day.
And Dr. Perlmutter
is a big subscriber to the "use it or lose it" theory
of brain health.
I see so many
people passing their day involved in passive activities like
watching television, which does not require any response from
their brain-it's a one way street. That's a sure-fire way to
lose it. If you don't use it, if you're not involved in brain
challenging activities everyday, doing things that you have
to be held responsible for; like playing bridge or doing crossword
puzzles or interacting with people-listening to their stories
and responding to their conversation- then that is really one
of the best things you can do to speed your brains decline.
