Improve Your Voice II
Interview
with Roger Love, Voice Coach

Mike Carruthers:
Choosing your words carefully may be important when you want
to make a good impression, but, maybe not as important as you
think.
Roger
Love:
Let me tell you, my friend, the words that you speak only count
for about 5% to 8% of whether or not anyone even believes what
you are saying.
Vocal
Coach, Roger Love…
What
matters has to do with the sounds your voice makes - aside from
the words - and people don’t know that.
It’s
like, hey, if I have the right suit, or if I comb my hair the
right way, I’m going to have a better life. And, then, they
don’t get what they want.
One very
common problem is people have no melody in their voice.
It’s
as if there was just one piano key, and they keep hitting the
same key over and over and over and over again. That’s called
monotone.
The truth
is, if I speak like, this you just want to hang up on me as
fast as possible, or turn away to someone who’s more interesting.
To put
more melody in your voice…
Literally,
when you’re speaking, just force yourself to sometimes go up.
And,force yourself to sometimes go down.
And,
Roger says people who say "um" and "ah"
a lot in their pauses can stop doing that, if they stop pausing.
If I’m
speaking, and I stop, there’s a pause there and the natural
inclination is to fill it.
Whereas,
instead of pausing, I just stretch the words out. So instead
of me saying, “The hills are alive with the sound of music,”
I say (stretching the words) “The hills are alive with the sound
of music.” Do you see what I’m doing?
