Mike Carruthers:
About
ten percent of us are left-handed and there's been some interesting
news coming out about lefty's.
Dr. Stanley
Coren:
The evidence seems to suggest that we were all designed to be
right-handed and there seem to be two ways that left-handers
come about.
Stanley Coren,
Professor of Psychology at The University of British Columbia
and author of the book
The Left-Handers Syndrome…
The first way
is when the gene (which we seem to have for right-handedness)
is not expressed - we believe that half of all left-handers
come about through some sort of birth stress or pregnancy difficulty.
Most right-handed
people do everything right-handed; most left-handed people do
at least a few things right-handed. And what about this notion
that lefty's are somehow more creative than right-handed people?
There is some
evidence that left-handers have more divergent thinking - divergent
thinking is one component of creativity where you sort of reach
out and grab novel solutions. There's another interesting finding,
which is that left-handers tend to have better spatial ability,
a better ability to image things in their mind's eye. That seems
to explain the reason why there are more left-handed architects,
chess masters and great painters than you would expect on the
basis of chance.
