Mike
Carruthers:
Think for a minute, what is it that makes you happy?
Stephen
Pollan:
Material things, we think make ourselves happy, but they don't.
Steven Pollan,
author of the book, It's
All In Your Head…
It's not created
by having money, it's not created by having a successful job,
it's not created by having the new car, the second home. What
we do is we confound or confuse pleasure with happiness. All
the other things, look, I'm in favor of and I enjoy them and
you know I'm sure you do too whenever you can. But they give
you pleasure they do not give you happiness.
Steven is an
attorney financial advisor and coach who's had hundreds of clients.
A lot of whom
were quite successful and you know, they had the second car
and they had the three-car garage and they had the box seats
at the Philharmonic, yet they were not happy. Because in the
case of many of them, it's what's next, or why am I not more
like so and so?
Steven says people
who are truly happy share some very specific attitudes.
One is you're
just where you're supposed to be. What that means, is you're
unique, you're a custom job, you do not compare yourself with
anybody.
So, if happiness
is not pleasure, what is it?
It starts with
being peaceful and then it develops from there-happiness, you
know, I can use another word, joy.
