Interview
with Dr. Urvashi Rangen, Sr. Scientist, Consumer Reports

Mike
Carruthers:
Organic food has become mainstream, sales of organic food is
up about 20% every year. So, what does organic really mean?
Dr. Urvashi
Rangen:
Organic fruits and vegetables are grown without the use of most
long lasting chemical pesticides.
Dr. Urvashi Rangern,
Senior Scientist at Consumer Reports Magazine, which has an
article about organic food in its January issue…
Organic production
does use natural based pesticides and the fruits and vegetables
are not void of any pesticide residue- but overall they're much
lower in pesticide residues.
There is still
some debate about how harmful exposure to pesticides in conventional
food is, but if you should choose to buy organic…
There's the 100%
organic label that means the product is 100% organic, all natural,
all certified organic ingredients-it is the most meaningful.
When you just see the term organic it means that it is 95% organic,
and so 5% of that product can contain non-organic ingredients.
The third tier of value is the made with organic label, that
means that at least 70% of the product has to be organic.
There is one
category of food where claims of organic are meaningless- and
that is seafood.
Buying organic
seafood at this juncture is a waste of money. There are no standards
right now for what organic seafood has to mean.
