Mike
Carruthers:
What makes for a happily married man?
Scott
Haltzman:
In my experience the secret to being a happily married man is
first and foremost to help bring his wife to a point where she
feels happy and she feels content.
Psychiatrist
Dr. Scott Haltzman, author of the book, Secrets
Of Happily Married Men…
Because most
of us as men, we're able to settle. If our marriage isn't estatic
and other parts of our life are doing ok, we're able to say,
"In balance, I'm alright." But most women really view
their domestic life, their relationship life as critically important.
And if they're not happy then you're not going to be happy as
a husband.
But often Dr.
Haltzman says men who make the commitment to give and give often
feel as if they give without getting back.
But the odds
are, if you were to ask their wives, their wives would say the
same thing. Their wives would say that they feel they they're
giving. So, my view is you need to give more than 50%, you can't
just say, I'm going to give and I'm going to give and then after
awhile I'm going to sit back and wait. And if that giving is
a source of love for you then it won't feel like work it'll
feel like you're really doing something positive. And what happens
in particularly with your wife is that when she realizes that
your primary goal is her happiness- boy, the world opens up
for you and you really do start to get a lot of your needs met.
Tomorrow, how
couples therapy puts men at a disadvantage- I'm Mike Carruthers
and that's Something You Should Know.
