Time Management
Interview
with Vince Panella, author of the book, The
26 Hour Day
|
Mike Carruthers:
Managing your time better usually means, to most people, organizing
your time better.
Vince
Panella:
In other words we're going to use a to-do list we're going to
take a day planner and this is going to be our end all, be all
of how to gain more time.
Vince
Panella, author of the book,
The 26 Hour Day…
And it's
a nice tool but if that's your way to gain more time you've
got so much more that you're leaving untapped. Because what
determines your ability to have control of your time isn't being
organized it's your ability to control your behaviors.
And the
first behavior a lot of us could work on controlling is our
sleep.
If you
are averaging less than seven hours of sleep a night you want
to work on this one behavioral factor first. All the research
I've done I've found that sleep impacts ninety percent of our
time. And if you are not getting enough sleep things start going
very quickly. And we're not even mentioning factors such as
injuries caused because you're not paying attention to what
you're doing on your job (like) mistakes made, accidents that
can happen, being sick.
And before
you start all this time management planning Vince says you have
to know what you're planning it all for.
And it's
nothing more than creating a clear and detailed picture of the
future you want. And I mean the future you want on a personal
level as well as in your job or your career. What do you want
that to look like in two to three years? And you see does everything
you have on your schedule take you at least one step forward
towards where you want to go. If it doesn't, why are you doing
it?
