Interview
with Andrea Demirjian, author of
Kissing |
Mike
Carruthers:
Kissing, do people in all cultures kiss?
Andrea Demirjian:
Anthropologists believe about 90% of the world's population kisses
as we think of as kissing.
Andrea Demirjian,
author of the book, Kissing…
There are cultures
that absolutely don't kiss, like in the Himalayas they think
that saliva is very dirty- but it's not so much as a taboo per
say.
A lot of our
kissing customs began with the ancient Romans.
The Romans who
started the ritual of men kissing their wives at the end of
the day but it's not such a romantic thing that we would think
it was really because they wanted to taste their wives lips
to make sure they hadn't been drinking from the homemade wine
all day long. And they also started a lot of things like kissing
at the altar to seal the deal. Kissing the rings and robes of
leaders as a sign of respect and reverence, that all started
during the Roman Time.
Ever wonder why
French kissing is called that.
The term French
kissing interestingly enough was coined by Americans in the
1920's because they thought that everything that the French
did was so overtly sexy and provocative to a point of being
offense. Whereas in France they don't' call it French kissing
they call it soul kissing or deep kissing much like the Roman's
do.
And do you remember
your first kiss?
About 50% of
people have their first kiss at the age of 14 or a romatic kiss
as we know it. And everyone that I talk to both men and women
all remember their first kiss in such vivid detail.
