Carruthers:
In many marriages there seems to be a tension between husband and wife, and to
help break that tension… Scott Haltzman: I'm asking
wives to understand their husbands; that there are certain fundamental ways that
your husband operates. And if you appreciate that you'll see where he's working
to make the relationship better. Dr.
Scott Haltzman, author of the book The
Secrets of Happily Married Women… What
I'll often hear women say is, "When I talk to my husband about something
that is on my mind and is really bothering me, he'll crack a joke." But what
women sometimes don't realize is that for men, humor is a way of trying to work
through problems. So you see, he's trying to make you feel better in a way that
would make him feel better. Dr.
Haltzman says a common problem is that women often try to direct their husband's
to act in certain ways. This
would happen to me in my own life. I would get home at the end of the day and
my wife would say, "Oh, I've just videoed this episode of 'Oprah.' You need
to see it!" That's not how I function. Guys don't want that kind of information
unless they're asking or unless they're seeking it. And so it actually feels like
a form of hostility. Often
when women don't feel that connection they're looking for… What
happens is a lot of women will, rather than make themselves more attractive to
us, to try to pull us home because they're so much fun to be with, end up getting
angry and pushing men away. Even when they don't realize it. At
