Mike
Carruthers:
Your prescription medications where in your house do you keep
them?
Bill Thomas M.D.:
The best place for almost all medications is a place that's cool
and dry. Americans on the other hand keep most of their medicines
in the bathroom where it is warm and damp.
Dr. Bill Thomas
one of the contributors to the new book, The
AARP Guide To Pills strongly recommends you store your medications
somewhere other than the bathroom.
Now in order to save money Dr. Thomas says when you're prescribed
a medication you should always try the generic version first.
Generic drugs
are the best value in healthcare. They are the same chemical
compounds and they work just as well.
Or so he says,
but I know and you've probably heard stories of people who swear
the generic version just doesn't work as well as the brand name.
I remember one
day having a patient come in and tell me that since I switched
her to generic Xanax it just was not working. I came to realize
that every person is an individual and if she believed that
the generic Xanax was not working for her then I'd put her on
the brand name drug. But for most people the generic works just
as well.
And for many
medications a great way to save money is to buy a pill splitter.
You see drug
companies will charge the same amount of money for a 40mg pill
as they do as the 80mg pill. So you can actually buy the 80mg
pill and just pop them in half and save money.
