Mike
Carruthers:
When you get sick or injured you usually feel bad emotionally.
Dr. Charles Foster:
We found in our research that 60% of your overall feeling state
when you're sick or injured comes from your emotions.
Dr. Charles Foster,
author of the book Feel
Better Fast…
But here's the
thing - you're getting 100% of your physical needs taken care
of because we live in America and we have great doctors here.
But you're probably getting close to 0% of your emotional needs
getting taken care of. This means that there is a huge opportunity
to feel better because most of your feeling yucky is not being
dealt with.
So, when you're
sick or injured, start by asking yourself what you're feeling.
"Am I really
just sad and depressed? Is it anxiety?" That's really important.
And then the next thing you do is you say, "What do I need?"
Here's why this works so well - we fall prey to these emotions
because we feel helpless. And by starting to ask "What
do I need?", you begin the process of feeling less helpless.
Illness or injury
can be isolating and Dr. Foster believes
contact with others can be helpful.
It's not how
much contact you have with other people, it's the certainty
of contact. Even if you're alone most of the day but you know
that for one hour a day someone is going to stop by and be with
you, that makes a big difference.
