Our New Ebay Culture II
Interview
with Daniel Nissanoff, author of
Future Shop |
Mike
Carruthers:
Only a tiny percentage of the population has ever sold anything
on Ebay but imagine if everybody did.
Daniel Nissanoff:
If you think about it you have things in your home today that
you're not using. In fact $2,000 could be found in the average
American home- the value of things that they are no longer using.
Daniel Nissanoff,
author of the book, Future
Shop says one of the things that's made selling on Ebay
much simpler now is there are stores you can take your stuff
to and they'll do all the work.
And so with the
advent of these new drop shops it becomes much easier for you
to access that community and you'll get a lot more value for
it because these stores sell hundreds of items a week and therefore
have a reputation.
And reputation
is very important on Ebay and is one of the reasons why luxury
items don't sell that well.
The average sale
on Ebay is about $40. Even though last year they did almost
30 billion dollars in sales. The reason for that is because
people don't want to take the risk of getting ripped off. As
great of a platform as Ebay is there are not so great people
that trade on the site. As a result the more expensive something
is the less likely somebody's willing to buy it.
Daniel would
like to see everybody give online auctions a try.
Go into your
closet, find something that you're truly not using anymore and
drive over to one of these drop off stores and I can assure
you that once you do it you'll feel lighter your life will be
less cluttered and then you get a check at the end of the day.
