with Ellen Kossek, author of CEO
of Me | Mike
Carruthers:
Work - you go in at 9:00am and you leave at 5pm. Employers who expect that today
of their workers may not be living in the real world because there are always
schedule conflicts. Ellen Kossek: Kids get sick, babysitters
don't show up, dogs need to go to the vet and so we need to really set up easy
ways to allow people permission to find a trained worker to do their job if they
have to be absent. Ellen
Kossek, author of the book
CEO of Me, says employers need to understand that things are different today. About20%
of us are called the "sandwich generation," with both elders and children.
And then there are a lot of us (particularly the Gen-Y generation) who really
want to not have work be such a big part of the life like the baby boomers did. If
you don't feel like you have the flexibility to balance your job and personal
life, Ellen says you tend to feel out of control. If
you're not in control, that is linked to a whole host of health problems like:
depressive symptoms, sleep quality, blood pressure. So not being in control is
not only just a matter of conflict it's a matter of health. So,
if you need to ask your boss for some time off… The
first thing to do is to think about your boss and your boss's position and so
if you need time off, and you come to the boss with a plan like, "I'm willing
to work Christmas eve in exchange for time off." So I think part of this
is thinking like a boss and then going to your boss with some kind of solution
rather than just an entitlement. At
