Raising Your Metabolism To Burn More Calories
Interview
with Reza Yavari, M.D., author of It
Must Be My Metabolism
|
Mike
Carruthers:
Do you know what your metabolism is?
Reza Yavari M.D.:
Metabolism is the process by which our body decides to either
save energy or spend calories.
Dr. Reza Yavari,
faculty member at Yale University School of Medicine and author
of the book, It
Must Be My Metabolism…
Two people can
eat the same food one gains weight the other one doesn't, two
people can do the same exercise one loses weight the other one
doesn't and it's because they have different metabolism.
The important
thing is you can raise your metabolism making it easier to burn
fat and calories.
The best way
to do it is by eating frequent high protein meals and snacks
and exercising on a regular basis. When you eat protein your
intestines release a hormone called PYY that tells your brain
that you have eaten, that's the satiety hormone. If you skip
meals your brain actually is constantly getting the opposite
signal from the stomach, so skipping meals actually often results
in the opposite- people gain weight.
And what does
exercise do for you?
Any kind of exercise
as long as you raise your heart rate in the 120 beats per minute
range and as long as you do it for 30 minutes burns calories
while you're exercising- but it also keeps your burn rate up
for about 6 hours. So people who reach a plateau with their
weight we often recommend them to split their exercise session
into 2, that way they raise their burn rate twice a day.
