Carruthers:
You are more likely to die from heart disease than any other cause and yet…
Dean Ornish, M.D.: Ninety-five percent of heart disease
is completely preventable (knowing what we know now) simply by making different
lifestyle choices. Dr.
Dean Ornish, author of the book The
Spectrum, says we all know the importance of making healthier food choices,
but… It's not only
what you eat but how you eat. If you eat mindlessly, you get all the calories
and very little of the pleasure. It's kind of like, have you ever had the experience
of eating a bag of popcorn while watching an intense movie and you suddenly realize
that the bag is empty and you didn't even hardly taste it - has that ever happened
to you? And so you get all of the calories and very little, if any, of the pleasure.
But if you really pay attention to what you're eating (like for me it's chocolate,
that's my indulgence) you can get much more pleasure and you don't need nearly
as much of it to get an even greater amount of pleasure and joy in your life. Dr.
Ornish says we need to get away from the concept of dieting and instead make some
of the sensible food choices you've heard a million times before that you can
really sustain for the long run. So
for example when you make these changes your brain gets more blood, you see more
clearly, you have more energy, you feel better, you need less sleep. Your heart
gets more blood, you can reverse or prevent even severe heart disease; your skin
gets more blood -so you age less quickly, you don't wrinkle as much. And so for
many people, these are choices worth making not simply to prevent something bad
from happening or just to live longer, but more importantly just to live better.
