Mike
Carruthers:
In
the workplace there are some things women, and men who are feeling
a bit insecure, tend to do that are not in their best interest.
Lois Frankel PhD:
Things like explaining ad naseum, and what that means
is making your point and then making it one more time, and then
making it a third time just to make sure everybody understands.
Career coach
Dr. Lois Frankel, author of the book Nice
Girls Don't Get the Corner Office...
When you speak,
remember short sounds confident, use fewer words, give your
bottom line first, give two or three pieces of supporting information
and stop.
Dr. Frankel says
women will often sacrifice their power in the work place in
order to be liked.
I don't happen to think they're mutually exclusive, I think
you can be liked and get your needs met, and that's exactly
what men know how to do. I think women just need to tape over
those old voices and those old messages around about how they're
supposed to behave, and instead embrace their powers.
And another tip
to show more power and confidence in the workplace...
Is in a meeting,
be among the first two or three people to speak - early speakers
are accorded a kind of confidence, and assertiveness, that later
speakers aren't. Don't feel as if you always have to give your
opinion. Speaking can include asking a question, clarifying,
supporting what someone else has said; so be among the first
to speak.
