Do Men Really Earn More Than Women
Interview
with Warren Farrell PhD, author of the book, Why
Men Earn More |
Mike Carruthers:
Everyone
knows that men earn more money than women, right? Well, not exactly.
Warren
Farrell PhD:
When you have never married men who have never had
children and you compare them with never married women who have
never had children the never married men who have never had
children earn only 85% of what the never married women earn.
Warren
Farrell, author of the book, Why
Men Earn More says yes men do earn more in many cases but
the whole issue is much more complicated and he studied it for
three years.
And what
I discovered was that men and women actually do twenty-five
significantly different things and each of those things lead
to men earning more money but also lead to women having better
lives.
In other
words women are more likely to make choices that put life and
family first. Men are more likely to sacrifice those things
for their career. Now you've probably heard that male doctors
earn more than female doctors however…
The male
doctor is more likely to be a cardiac surgeon the female doctor
more likely to be a psychiatrist so he's more likely to work
more hours a week have more residency's, internships background
and training. When you look more closely and you say do female
and male cardiac surgeons both working the same number of hours
a week, then who earns more? That's when you find that the woman
earns more for the same work. But we often times summarize same
work as being they're both doctors therefore the women and men
are doing the same work - not true.
