Mike
Carruthers:
Now that our celebration of President's Day is over, how about
some less flattering stories of some of our President's…
Cormac O'Brien:
One of my favorites is the story of James Monroe. He got into
an argument with his own Secretary of the Treasury, a fellow named
Crawford. It got so bad that Crawford started threatening violence
and the President had to chase the guy out of the White House
with a hot fire tongs.
Historian, Cormac
O'Brien, author of the book Secret
Lives Of U.S. Presidents has a good story about Richard
Nixon.
He once insisted
that the White House doormen wear uniforms including epilates
and tall hats reminiscent of the War of 1812 and whatnot. And
this drew so much criticism that he was forced to get rid of
them. He ended up selling the uniform to a marching band out
in the Midwest somewhere.
President Herbert
Hoover was a bit quirky.
Herbert Hoover
insisted that he never see the White House servant staff. The
bell system throughout the White House was used to warn them
of his approach and they were directed to jump into a closet
of bedroom so that he wouldn't have to see them.
And Cormac has
a good story about First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. Because she
was out amongst the public so often her advisors wanted her
to carry a gun.
After seeing
her squeeze off a couple of practice rounds at the FBI firing
range J. Edgar Hoover himself told the President that the gun
was clearly a bad idea, she was such a bad shot. She ended up
carrying a revolver with her in automobile but it was never
loaded.
